Science Museum CosmoCaixa Barcelona

Science Museum CosmoCaixa Barcelona

The Science Museum CosmoCaixa run by "la Caixa" Community Projects, and is designed to stimulate people's knowledge and opinion of science through exhibitions and a wide variety of activities.

Science Museum CosmoCaixa offers its visitors a whole host of activities and permanent and temporary exhibitions to give anyone who is interested a greater insight into the world of science.

Highlights of exhibitions include the permanent exhibition "The Hall of Univers", where you can discover the cosmos and its evolution from the Big Bang to our days. An interactive journey that goes back to the creation of the cosmos, traverses the evolution of species and penetrates the depths of the human brain. The "Flooded Forest", which recreates 1,000 m2 of an Amazonian rainforest ecosystem and features piranhas, crocodiles and other animal and plant species typical to the zone; the "Geological Wall", comprising seven spectacular sections of real rock which illustrate the world's different geological structures and the "Micrarium", a new permanent exhibition where you can immerse yourself and explore the microscopic world of all kinds of materials, natural and artificial, organic and inorganic through different magnification instruments.

The Science Museum CosmoCaixa also offers other areas, exhibitions and activities related with Science for children, adults and families: the "Bubble Planetarium", "Creactivity" and other workshops for families and shows that combine the performing arts and science.

The museum building is just as fascinating as its contents. Cosmocaixa is a beautiful example of modernista architecture, designed and built between 1904 and 1909 by Josep Domènech i Estapà. The modern extension carried out in 2004 highlighted the value of the century-old building while placing it in a new context.

Accessibility details

CosmoCaixa is adapted for people with reduced mobility and offers facilities as well as a number of resources for visually and hearing-impaired visitors.

Free for disabled card holders plus an escort.

To get to the museum, take the 196 bus from the Plaça Kennedy (Avinguda Tibidabo station, at the end of line 7 run by FGC-Catalan railways) to the stop in front of the museum.

The museum has a buffet restaurant.
Visual impairment
CosmoCaixa has tactile and colour-contrasted pathways leading to the planetarium. The planetarium has an audiodescription system for the visually impaired.

The lift panels have Braille characters to aid access to the different floors.

The museum runs two activities which are highly recommended, although they don’t have specific resources for the visually impaired: Toca Toca (Touch and Feel) and the Bosc Inundat (Flooded Forest). Toca Toca brings visitors into contact with the flora and fauna of different habitats and gives them the opportunity to touch different animals. The Bosc Inundat is recommended for visually impaired people due to the sensations and sounds it reproduces.

There are other tactile elements in the museum, including reproductions of skulls from the different stages in the evolution of man.

Hearing impairment
The ticket offices, information point and planetarium are fitted with induction loops.

Motor impairment
The museum provides wheelchairs to help reduced-mobility visitors get around the museum. They are available from the information point at the main entrance.

The building has six floors that are connected by a series of spacious lifts, escalators and ramps, which are set on a gradient of between 8% and 16%. There is a spiral walkway connecting five different levels, set at a gradient of 10% and without landings on each level. Wheelchair users should better use the lift to access the different levels.

There is a flight of steps at the main entrance to the planetarium. Wheelchair users should use the rear entrance and sit on the back row because the rest of the auditorium is tiered and has steps. There is flat-floor access to the Clik and Flash areas and the Planetari Bombolla (Bubble Planetarium), which are for children aged 3 to 7. The seating in the Auditorium and the Àgora room is tiered and has steps so wheelchair users must sit on the first or last rows because they can enter using the front or rear entrance.

The shop and cafeteria are at ground level. Wheelchair users can enter the restaurant using an alternative ramp with an 8% gradient.

The museum has a car park, with reserved disabled bays.

The building has adapted toilets on every floor.
