Casa Milà - "La Pedrera"

Casa Milà - La Pedrera

In the central Barcelona's Passeig de Gràcia, we find the Casa Milà or La Pedrera, a blend of fantasy and functionality make this architectural landmark a must-see visitor attraction. This is the culmination of Antoni Gaudí's career, designed as a modernista building tailored to the new social needs, without forgetting his main source of inspiration: nature and organic forms.

When Pere Milà commissioned Antoni Gaudí to build a residential block, it gave the architect the perfect opportunity to bring to fruition one of his most complete works. Built between 1906 and 1912, the Casa Milà occupies an entire corner of the Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona's Eixample. The architect created an astonishing modernista style building, set out around two interior courtyards which provide the flats with ventilation and light. Curved, sinuous forms are the main elements inside and outside La Pedrera. The Casa Milà's façade resembles the moving sea, the waves interacting with the seaweed-motifs on the wrought-iron balcony railings. The large stone blocks are a type of skin that covers the skeleton of a building free of load-bearing walls.

La Pedrera, the Catalan for stone quarry, is actually the pejorative name given to the building by the locals who were amazed by the modern Gaudiesque forms. The Casa Milà was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Three areas are open to the public: the dreamlike attic space, with is brick catenary arches; the rooftop, where the chimneys recall the silhouette of warriors rising up among the dunes of the desert; and finally a period apartment.

Finally, you can uncover an unprecedented space, the mezzanine, thanks to La Pedrera Virtual Experience, an interactive proposal that combines real-world surroundings with holograms, allowing you to immerse yourself in a multisensory environment to discover hidden secrets of La Pedrera.

Visitors with a disability of 33% or more are entitled to reduced admission. If the disability is 65% or more, and the visitor needs a companion to help them, the companion enters free of charge. The free admission is provided at the ticket desk once the visitor has shown the necessary documents showing the degree of disability.

Visual impairment
Due to the unusual layout of the building, we recommend blind or visually impaired visitors bring a companion with them.

La Pedrera has tactile spaces, as well as a tactile model of the building with interior and exterior architectural and sculptural details, which is found at the start of the visit in the corridor between the two courtyards.

There are also tactile maps on each floor showing its location and the itinerary of the visit. The maps are three-dimensional and feature raised and Braille lettering, as well as lettering in ink, in three languages. These maps are located on the ground floor, on the rooftop, in the attic space (Espai Gaudí) and on the fourth floor (La Pedrera period apartment).

La Pedrera runs a guided tour for blind and visually impaired visitors. For enquiries and availability, contact: grups@lapedrera.com. Tel. 93 214 25 76.

However, the rooftop is not suitable for wheelchair users as it is set out on different levels. Nevertheless, they can enjoy a general view of the rooftop from the platform.

When using the adapted lifts, wheelchair users are guided by members of the team at La Pedrera.

Wheelchairs are available to make it easier for people with restricted mobility to visit. Service subject to availability. Pre-booking essential at: accessibilitat@fcatalunyalapedrera.com
