This small but charming local market stands in the centre of the beautiful porticoed square, the Plaça del Mercadal in the Sant Andreu district. Its origins, like so many other markets, can be traced back to the middle of the 19th century, a period when hawking in Barcelona was regulated with the building of covered markets.
In the past, farmers and hawkers congregated on the Plaça del Mercadal to sell their wares. Sant Andreu Market was designed in 1850 in order to provide them with permanent premises, and a suitable place with the correct lighting conditions and ventilation to sell foodstuffs. The metal roof and exposed brick walls were built in 1914. If you go inside, you'll find a market that is modest in size where you can buy almost anything. Above all, you'll be struck by the family atmosphere which resembles a village market in olden times, and the approachable, affable stallholders and shoppers.

Sant Andreu Market is a wheelchair-accessible municipal amenity with no architectural barriers.
The market building is square and not too big. It stands in the centre of the Plaça Mercadal, a porticoed square where there are all kinds of shops. It has wide pavements providing obstacle-free level access, and is mainly pedestrianised.
As you enter the square from Carrer del Mercat you’ll find the main façade of the market which has a single entrance providing level access. On the left, there is a façade lined with stalls selling everyday items, not food. The rear façade acts as a loading and unloading bay for goods.
There is a café inside the market with table service. The manager’s office is on a mezzanine without a lift in the left-hand aisle. You’ll find it as you come in from the main façade.
Sant Andreu Metro station (L1, red line) has a lift providing step-free access to and from the street. It is situated in the Plaça Orfila, very near the market.
Entrance:
The market has four entrances, one on each façade. All the entrances are accessible and have a double glass sliding door. The entrances are 150 cm wide.
Getting around inside the market:
There are no obstacles to impede movement inside the market. The floor consists of different types of thin tiles, except for the central area where the fish stalls are located which have narrow drainage channels.
The aisles are wide enough to get around in a wheelchair. The aisles at the side have a number of benches and seats where people can rest.
Toilets:
There are three toilets. One of them is adapted. They are located in the left-hand aisle as you come in through the main entrance.
The adapted toilet has a sink without a pedestal and single-lever mixer tap. The toilet has a fold-down grab bar and a fixed grab bar. It also has a baby-changing station.
The toilets are usually locked, but if you want to use them, ask one of the stallholders from the stall in front for the key.
