Museu Tàpies
The Museu Tàpies is housed in one of Barcelona's most important modernista landmarks, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, and showcases one of the largest collections of art works by the Catalan artist.
The Museu Tàpies is housed in an early Catalan art nouveau, or modernista, building designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner and is a reflection of Antoni Tàpies’ close ties to Barcelona. It was set up by the artist in 1984 with the aim of furthering the study and knowledge of modern and contemporary art.
Today, it remains true to its founding spirit and has become a platform for contemporary creativity while contributing to a better understanding of the creative process, beyond the work and the figure of Antoni Tàpies. The institution brings other artists’ works to a wider audience and connects artists from Spain and around the world. It organises temporary exhibitions and special activities for a broad public from a multi-layered and interdisciplinary approach and produces different publications.
The Museu Tàpies has one of the most complete collections of the artist’s work, mainly comprising donations from Antoni Tàpies and his wife, Teresa Barba.
There is a library inside the building that has vast holdings of books about the artist and Asian, pre-Columbian, African and Oceanic art and culture. Other fields are also represented, from architecture, design and the decorative arts to photography, film and video.
This museum is one of the six Barcelona attractions included in the Articket: a skip-the-line passport that is valid for twelve months and features savings of 45%.

Accessibility details
The Fundació Antoni Tàpies has practically no architectural barriers.
The old building is well adapted for wheelchair users. An extension was recently added to the rear of the building which is fully accessible.
Wheelchair loan service. Please enquire at reception.
Guide and assistance dogs are admitted throughout the building.
The Foundation runs activities for families, schools and colleges and the general public, as well as guided tours of the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions.

The Foundation hosts educational activities for schools and families, with supporting materials that reveal the textures and materials used by Antoni Tàpies in his works. The tactile elements are also very useful for guided tours with blind or visually impaired visitors.
The videos on show in the Foundation are usually subtitled.
Entrance:
The main entrance has a 12 cm-high step. The left-hand side door is the alternative entrance for wheelchair users. It is signed with its corresponding pictogram and there is bell. A member of staff will come out to open the door and escort you into the building, either via the permanent ramp (which is short but steep) or by fitting a mobile one that reduces the gradient of the permanent ramp. Right by the entrance there is a spacious lift which takes visitors to the reception area and galleries.
Reception:
The reception is located on the lower mezzanine below street level. This area also has the museum shop and bookshop and lockers.
The reception desk is dual height: 122 cm and 76 cm. The lowest part only allows wheelchairs to approach from the side.
The lockers have a maximum height of 103 cm.
Mobility inside:
The interior of the building is easy to move around. The galleries are spacious and there is enough space between the exhibits for wheelchair users.
The building has non-slip flooring.
The main gallery, auditorium and toilets are located on floor -1.
The temporary exhibitions gallery is on floor -2. This floor is set out on two levels separated by a flight of three steps. There is a stair lift for wheelchair users that runs along these steps.
There is another exhibition space and the Foundation library on floor 1. The doorway into the library has a small 4 cm riser.
Lifts:
There are two lifts which are freely available to visitors and serve all the floors of the building.
The one in the old building (door width 125 cm) doesn’t travel as far as the rooftop. The lift in the modern extension (door width 80 cm) provides access to the rooftop where the large-scale sculpture “Sock” is located.
Toilets:
There is an adapted toilet on floor -1.
The cubicle has a sliding door and is 81 cm wide. There is a fixed grab bar on the left of the toilet and a fold-down bar on the right. There is a free space below the washbasin. It is 71 cm high and 46 cm deep.
Shop:
The shop is on the lower mezzanine where the reception and enquiry desk are located.
The counter in the shop is dual height: 122 and 76 cm. The space is suitable for wheelchair users.
The Fundació Tàpies works with social-inclusion projects and offers adapted activities for people with learning difficulties.
